Howling Blues has made the cut from over 300 entries to the final 138 that will be presented at the Images Gallery Juried show. The show will be hung and available for viewing during regular hours at the gallery starting Wednesday, April 17th through May 9th.

Unfortunately the Jayhawks went down in the NCAA tournament. I was really hoping for the Trifecta today.

mArTch MADNESS starts today.

The culmination of a whirling dervish of a week. Less than a week ago this art show was just an outline in my head. But because of the insistence that we could make this work by Dave DeHetre, Amanda Monaghan, and Kristina Crawford here we are with 64 pieces of work by 64 artists.

The work is about as diverse as you can get. Sculpture, Collage, Photography, Sketches, Acrylics, Oils, Woodworks by artists ranging from their 20s (possibly younger) to their 70′s.
The jury is diverse as well. Curator, bloggers from 3 different view points, TV personalities, and traditional artist forming the panel.

4 regions based on art centers. From America we have San Francisco and New York. Over the pond it’s London and Paris.

It’s been a frenzy, and at times trying. A 24 hour a day of rushing, waiting, napping, working, working, working, improvising, organizing, hanging, rehanging, making lists, texting, emailing, questions, questioning, answers, answers, and inevitably some mistakes.

With a show this big, this fast I knew some things would be less than perfect. That’s part of the reason we decided to rush through and do it this year instead of next. A trial run to work out the kinks for next year. And I promise we will learn from where we fell a bit short.

But now we are here. Today it starts. And I am going to sit back and enjoy watching it all unfold.

Thanks everyone for making this pipe dream of mine a reality.

The fact that the show came together is a Cinderella story in itself. Now it’s time to let Cinderella dance.

The seeding of the 64 artists will be via random drawing tomorrow. (Sunday) I’m kind of hoping for London.

We are now up to 70 participating artists and 7 jurors for mARTch MADNESS.

Round 1 will be on Weds the 27th. (Cuts to 32 artists)

Round 2 will be on Fri. The 29th. Final Friday (Cuts to Sweet 16)

Round 3 will be on Weds the 3rd. (Cut to Elite 8)

Round 4 will be on Fri. the 5th and will feature all of the rest of the cuts (Final 4 and Championship)

The final 2 slots will be juried in. For example if we have 70 total entries, the last 8 would be competing in a play in round for the last 2 spots.

The Lawrence Art Guild Receives 20% cut of all art sold at the show.

Drop Off is at 1109 Gallery from Weds through Sunday during regular business hours. Which I believe is 11-5 WTFS and 1-5 on Sunday.

Art MUST be hang ready. And artist info MUST be included with the art. (Artist, Title, Medium, Price, Dimensions)

All 64 pieces will hang for the duration of the show. But we will re-hang after the first 2 rounds to feature the pieces that advanced.

This Salon exhibit opens for viewing, Wednesday March 27, in the front of the 1109 Gallery.

When we have our 64 we will then do a blind drawing to assign 1-16 seedings for 4 regions like the tournament. This will be random chance with no attempt to rank the pieces ourselves. The regions will be named after the art regions of London, Paris, New York and San Francisco.

If you advance you have the option to put in a different piece for the next round up until the night we cut down to the Final 4.

In the course of the conversation I mentioned an idea I have been kicking around in my head for years.

“Next year I want to do 64 artist show set up like the NCAA tournament.” I continued to explain the outline in my head of how it would work, and how cool I thought it would be. And if I started planning now it could be ready by next year.

Both loved the idea. They insisted we do it. But not next year. By pooling resources we surmised we could pull it off.

Now 3 days later we have over 64 artists committed to being in the show. With more be added as well.

We have a growing panel of 5+ jurors from varied backgrounds and slants about art in general, and a way to let the public have a say in the voting as well.

I am convinced that there are only a handful of communities in the nation that could pull this off. And none better than Lawrence, Kansas.

I have been wanting to curate this show for years. This year is a test run for what will be an annual event to be put together in conjunction with the Lawrence Art Guild.

64 artists will all submit 1 work. A random drawing will assign a 1-16 seeding to each piece with 4 regions. The regions have been named London, Paris, New York, and San Francisco. ( No Lawrence Region because everyone would want to be in it.) A combination of jury voting, online voting, and ballots filled out by patrons will decide which pieces move on to the next round.

The show will be reset to feature the winning pieces for each round, culminating in a Final Four on the closing night. (All 64 pieces will be shown throughout the tournament.)

The idea is for the artists to show their best work they have available. The works are not required to have a sports theme whatsoever.

The first 62 confirmed artists will automatically be entered and seeded. All additional entries beyond 62 will be put into a juried play-in pool. With the 2 winning pieces being added into the field of 64.
